Portland

Posting from my phone... Went to agreat Puruvean restaurant called Andina last night. I highly recommend! The tappas were extrordinary and they had Peruvean beer and coctails available. After eating we decided to try and find one of the dirtiest bars in Portland. We succeeded. The Amazon bar in the Pearl District is quite possibly the mecca for derilicks and dudes with tattoos on their faces. We were drawn to the bar because of $1 PBR's. "Do you like our bar?" asked one of the fine gentlemen sitting at the bar slugging PBR one after another. Beau says to him "Uh, yeah. I mean how can you go wrong with $1 PBR?" The conversation at the bar was nonsensical. The guy with a semetrical tatoo that covered his entire face talked about Halloween and what he would be dressing up as for the party in the bar the next evening. Kind of funny since he's a Halloween freak everyday! After two beers (we had to have a couple to prove that we weren't scared of them) we headed over to the
aughing Lion Bar. I had gone there on a previous trip and watched a soccer game. This place was a lot more low key. We watched the Lakers-Rockets game and had a couple more beers. A pretty chill night. We're headed over to Forest Park today to get some exercise.... More to come....

Stupid Camera

Had another great weekend. Unfortunately, no pictures to support it. Somehow I erased the pics from my ride today....oh well. Anyway, we went to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Beau and Meggan on Friday. It was not as good as Spamalot but fun anyway. We ate at Gumbo's downtown before the show and had big food and several drinks....that might be the reason we weren't into the show much.

Saturday we went over to Arjen's soccer game and had the end of the season party at OB's. Goodtimes! Afterwards, I went over to Redstone Cyclery to pick up my light. This thing is wicked bright!!!! I won't be running into things when it's on! To bad I won't be able to use it for a few weeks...stupid work. That night we went into Lyons for the Halloween Parade. It gets bigger every year. All of the stores and businesses open up and hand out candy. It was fun to see almost everyone dressed up.

Sunday we had waffles (of course), dropped the kids off at my folks place and did our respective fun outdoor workouts. Ab ran 10 miles in preparation for the half marathon next week and I rode my bike up by Johnny Park. We both got home about 3:00 and went down to take the kids to another Halloween party...not nearly as fun as the Lyons parade but still good.

I got a busy three weeks ahead of me so posts will be real lean. I leave you with this:

Let the Weekend Begin!

I'm off to Portland for work on Monday so I'm planning a jam packed weekend before then. Ab and I are going down to Denver to see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at the Buell Theatre tonight.

Beau and Meggan will be meeting us there. I can't wait to go out to eat without kids...might be a bit more relaxing! Tomorrow we're going to Arjen's last soccer game of the season and the Halloween parade in Lyons. I'm hoping to get a ride in on Sunday....possibly Walker Ranch (counter clockwise). More to come....

Tuesday Night Ride

I had wanted to get out on one of the Tuesday night rides in a while. Unfortunately, I haven't had a light. This week Dave let me use the loaner light for the ride. There's good news and bad news. The good news is that the light I ordered is finally in. The bad news is that busy season is starting with work and I'm not going to get to use it much when I get it. Oh well, such is life. At least I got this ride in!

Tonight's ride was a good time. There were only four of us; Dave, Keith, Eric and I. We went up to Johnny Park and rode the BMX track up to Coulson Gulch. It was pretty chilly up there and I was glad I wore layers even though I was cursing up the hill because I was so hot. The downhill chill made up for the overheating. I really haven't rode much at night, some in college but not enough to say I was an experienced night rider. Good times and I'm glad I have a better light coming!! I was having problems with the loaner light moving around on my bar. Sometimes the light was pointed a ways off the trail. This bit me pretty bad towards the end of the ride; I totally didn't see a stump hanging out in the trail and slammed it with my left shin (good pictures to come). It hurt but not enough to keep me from riding. I really wish this pic turned out better. The moon really lit up the canyon nicely.

We made it back to the cars and met back at Oskar Blues for some beer and food. I'm pretty sure that two Gutbuckets of Dales helped my shin feel better!

I'm still feeling really slow after being off my bike for two weeks. Hopefully I can stay in shape enough to keep up on the next ride....

Pumpkins and Cold Weather

Busy weekend. We hit the pumpkin patch for our annual 10 pumpkin pickup before soccer. We got some nice ones including a whole bunch of weird gourds. The kids drag them all over the house until they get rotten.
With the weather coming in on Sunday, I decided to get the Rhino ready for action. Last month I had the lights, roof, windshield and beefier wheels installed. This should make my snow pushing a lot more pleasant this season.
Here's what I worked with last season...

I was stuck a lot and my plow wench was constantly breaking. This year should be much better... of course now it probably won't snow!

We had some friends up on Saturday evening. Lots of kids and good food (Thai Turkey burgers, Blue Cheese slaw cheese burgers, fresh cut fries and tons of healthy snacks from Ab's talk at the women's retreat in the morning); it was great time. During the party Dave, Clay and I decided we should brave the foul weather on Sunday and go for a ride.

I made waffles in the morning (good comfort food) while it was snowing outside. Ab went for her 9 mile run in the snow. Dave, Clay and I didn't get out until 3:00 pm. By then the snow had quit but it was windy and cold. We rode up Antelope, did a loop on Nelson and rode back to Lyons via Bitterbrush. Great ride other than I was sweating out the beer from the night before.
A fresh blanket of snow was on Longs and Meeker. Winter is here! I can't wait to go snowboarding!!!

Looks like I can use the loaner light for the Tuesday night ride. I also should have an update on the Mead in the next couple days ... possibly with at video. Stay tuned.

New Dub

I shouldn't have had that Monster Energy drink at 6:00pm for a late day pick me up. Now I can't sleep. Might as well share some excellent new school dub reggae:

For more of this check out Alpha and Omega's website: http://www.alphaandomega.co.uk/

Some more UK dub can be found here: http://www.disciplesbslbm.co.uk/
Checkout the broadcast section for some HEAVY BASS Dub.

This post is going to become somewhat disjointed now. Here's one of the funniest things I've seen on SNL in a while -- "People Getting Punched in the Face Just Before Eating"

Winter is upon us! One storm just came through the Rockies and we have another one on it's heels: Hopefully this keeps up. We could use another big snow year!

Look for another post this weekend. I haven't been on my bike in a while (hopefully Sunday depending on the weather above) and I have some new reggae vinyl that I want to review.....

Balloon Fiesta

I took Thursday and Friday off to attend the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta with Ab and the kids. Jamie from work pushed me to go (I had resisted the last few years). It was a short 7 hour drive down to the Tamaya Hyatt on the Tamayame Indian reservation. What a beautiful location! Since we had to get up at 4:30 am (!) the next morning to get to the Balloon Fiesta, we decided to stay in and have dinner at the Santa Ana Cafe in the hotel. The kids were just about to melt down mode so dinner wasn't as enjoyable as it could have been.

The next morning (Friday) we got up at 4:30 and met the rest of the group in the lobby for the caravan over to the Balloon Fiesta Park. Since we were corporate sponsors, we got VIP passes, close in parking and a tent with a catered Breakfast...not sure I'd want to do it any other way. We walked down onto the field to watch the shape balloons be filled with air and launched. Then Abby got the call to go ride in a balloon! The kids were not happy that Mommy left them but Dad was able to persevere and keep them mildly happy with the launching of the shape balloons. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera so I couldn't take pictures of all of the different shape balloons while Abby was flying. There were over 750 registered balloons for the event.

Just about ready to launch.

After a happy reunion of Mommy and children, we walked the festival next to the field. There was every kind of junk food you can think of; corn dogs, burritos, indian tacos, turkey legs, hamburgers, mini donuts and on and on and on. It must have been a mile long. Of course we had to buy some cheap souvenirs for the boys: a beach ball like balloon and a balloon necklace... $10 but totally worth it. At the end of junk food and souvenir hell row was a chainsaw carving competition. I'm not sure what chainsaws have to do with balloons but it was cool to watch for about 23 seconds.

Starved and cranky we headed back to the hotel with a stop for food at The Range Cafe in Bernalillio, NM. I definitely recommend this place. Ab had some excellent enchiladas and I had some out of this world chile rellenos. Full bellies, we headed to the hotel for a siesta. The boys didn't cooperate and we ended up skipping the much needed nap for some pool time. The pool has this awesome 3 story tube slide that sends you at about mach 3 in a corkscrew to the pool. I rode it several times. We were only in the pool for about 30 minutes before we had to get out and get ready for the night activities at the Balloon field.

There was a glow scheduled for the evening but there was too much wind and it was canceled. Luckily they moved the firework show earlier...although it was only 7:30 pm, it felt like 11:30 pm. The boys were beyond cranky by the time we got back to the hotel. After we got the boys down, I was able to sneak out to the hotel bar and catch the Rockies - D-Back 1st playoff game (They won!). I only had one drink (it cost me $24) and I was done.

Saturday morning started much like Friday. We thought about sleeping in but decided to go anyway after asking Arjen if he wanted to go. "Yup." It was lucky that we did go because I got to go up in the balloon this time. I rode with guy Ian who was in the Air Force stationed out of North Carolina. Definitely well qualified to be flying a balloon in my book. He had grown up around the fiesta and decided a few years ago that he should get into flying the balloons.

Flying over Cordera.

We flew for over an hour and a half before landing in a family's yard in Cordera on the West side of Albuquerque. I didn't know that a beautiful spot like this existed in Albuquerque. I thought that after we packed up the balloon we would just go back to the field. Nope. We had to go to a gas station to get ice and hang out for 20 minutes. After the gas station we had to go to a bank so Ian's dad could get cash...after waiting in line for another 20 minutes to talk to a teller. Hello, ATM? Meanwhile, Shelly (a customer of ours) and I were hanging out with the balloon team. This is where I will talk about balloon culture:

These people are a little different. From what I can tell, it's mostly a family thing and it runs for generations. They live to fly balloons. Anyone that gets up at 4:00 in the morning on a regular basis has to be a little different. The only way to fully understand what I'm doing a really bad job of explaining is to experience it yourself. Trust me, it's kind of weird.

We finally got back to the hotel at about noon and we were all completely exhausted. A quick bite to eat at the pool restaurant and it was nap time for all of us. The boys slept until about 4:00pm and we decided to skip Saturday night's festivities. Later we would find out that the "glow" happened and it was pretty cool. Oh well. Instead, we decided to have a little pool time and go out to eat. I got the name of a restaurant from the concierge but it was not what we were looking for. On the way to the recommended restaurant we passed a brewery restaurant in Cordera that just opened. "Bingo" I thought, "This will be perfect". Nope, it was really f-ing weird. I'd post a link to the place, but they don't have one and I don't think this place is going to last long. All of the tables, bars and bar backs were granite. The place was fixtured on the high end. The beer was marginal and the food was even more marginal. To make the place even more weird, we had Calamity Jane's cousin talking to us from the bar. Her degenerate boyfriend was giving our kids toys to play with and she was telling him "..don't distract the little ones from their dinner... I 'member when my son was that age and he was a real shit...now he's got one and I hope he gits it like I did..." Yikes! I felt like I was in the "Twilight Zone".

Ab and I got the kids down and decided to drink some wine on our porch behind our room. It was the first time the two of us had got to hang out without the kids. After a glass each we called it a night and slept in until 6:00 am when Arjen woke up.

A short 8 hour ride back (not sure why it took longer to get back) and we were home. It's good to be home.

Octoooooooooooooooooober

Longtime since the last post. Two crashed cars and not much fun in the last few weeks. We did go to a good friend's wedding in Minturn last weekend. The wedding was at Tigiwon Lodge and the reception was at the Minturn Saloon. One of the best weddings I've been to in a while. The leaves were still nice and golden up near Vail:

Still waiting on my light to arrive so I can take advantage of night rides with the Redstone Crew. I may only get next Tuesday's ride in as November is a complete mess with work. It'll get better...

New music worth listening to:

Ticklah vs. Axlerod

Great new dub from the same guys who gave us Dub Side of the Moon.

More to come soon.....
